Spring Space
created by Zhiyuan Huang
When we began creating Dance of Spring, we were interested in the small emotional changes that happen in everyday life. We wanted to look at moments that often pass unnoticed — a pause, a glance, a slight change in distance, or the feeling of being alone even when other people are close by.
We started with a domestic space because we wanted the work to feel familiar and personal. As we developed the piece, we began to notice how much the room itself could shape the movement. We worked with doors, corridors, furniture and everyday objects, and gradually allowed these things to become part of the choreography. We used them to explore how people move towards one another, move away, hesitate, or remain connected without speaking.
We also wanted to see what would happen if we created the choreography directly for the camera. We experimented with close framing, repetition, interrupted movement and changes of perspective. Through editing, we were able to bring separate moments together and create connections that would be very different in a live performance.
As the film developed, we became less interested in telling a clear story and more interested in creating a feeling. For us, Dance of Spring is about looking closely at ordinary life and noticing the emotions that sit quietly underneath it. We wanted to find something intimate, fragile and slightly unsettled within moments that might otherwise seem completely familiar.
