Ink and Trace

Before the Ink Settles started as a visual experiment. I was working with long-exposure and multiple-exposure photography, watching a single gesture stretch, overlap and leave behind several versions of itself. The result reminded me of ink before it dries — never completely still, always shifting at the edges.

That quality began to shape the movement. I worked with broad turns, sweeping arms and continuous changes of direction, allowing the costume to carry the action beyond the body. Through the camera, one phrase could remain visible while the next had already begun, so movement appeared to gather in layers rather than disappear.

I liked the way this made time feel less straightforward. The dancer could seem to arrive, dissolve and return within the same image. What had just happened was still present, but already changing.

The work stays inside that unfinished moment. Like wet ink spreading across paper, memory does not hold one fixed shape; it blurs, deepens and shifts each time we return to it. Before the Ink Settles became a way of holding that instability for a little longer, before everything becomes too clear.
